Mother's Day Around the World - Serbia

Serbia is another country that uses three full days to give Mom her due. Serbia is a lot different than any of the other countries that we are going to visit because their Mother’s Day is steeped in a combination of Catholic tradition and Mother Serbia.

Mother Serbia is the national personification of Serbia and presides over all of the Serbs. She is revered in patriotic songs and literature. She gave up her sons in war, her flag, her blood, but still carried on. Mother Serbia and her son pictured below.

When the tradition of the Serbs melded with the Church, the pragmatic Serbs decided that one holiday was enough, and added Mother’s Day to the Christian Christmas calendar. They enthusiastically adopted the tradition of gift giving while adding Mom to the festivities.

In addition to Mom, Serbs gladly honor children and men in their traditional feasts. Each gets a Sunday to be honored since the Serbs put family over anything else, including Christmas.

Here is where we go wildly off track! Although, in some homes, this might be an interesting custom to integrate into the celebration.

It takes a lot of rope to celebrate Mother’s Day in Serbia.

As each family member is honored, they are bound with rope. I don’t know … I’m just sayin’.

When the Children are bound, they must make a promise to behave. When the Father’s are bound, they must give Christmas gifts to their family members.

When they tie Mom up, they do not untie her until she gives all those yammering kids who promised to behave treats and gifts. It might have given rise to the saying, mom is at the end of her rope. Ponder.

The children get the first Sunday, the moms get the second Sunday, and dads go last.

THEN they can feast!

I tried to get  pictures of  a traditional Mother’s Day celebration in  Serbia, but never enter the words mother tied up into a search engine.

The pink peony is the flower of Serbia.

Here are some thing you don’t have to search for: handmade gift ideas for moms who don’t much care for rope!

Mother's Day Around the World - Ethiopia

Once the fall rainy season is over, Ethiopians begin their Antrosht festival honoring the mothers in their communities. The festival lasts for three days and everyone comes home to celebrate  their moms with large feasts.

They do not come empty-handed, either. Daughters are responsible for bringing the butter, vegetables, spices and cheese, and the sons bring home the meats that include lamb or bull.

Everything gets mixed together into a traditional hash. They still make mom cook the hash, though.

Then the entire family spends the rest of their time singing and dancing with mothers and daughters spreading butter on their faces and chests as part of the ceremonial dances, and the men sing of heroes and how they honor their families.

Mother’s Day in Ethiopia is traditionally celebrated in the fall. Even though some areas they celebrate on the second Sunday in May, the fall, when the rains stop, is the true Mother’s Day celebration for Ethiopia.

As we get ready to celebrate Mother’s Day, here are some gift ideas for mom, even if you are making her cook.

Mother's Day Around the World - India

On the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day is celebrated in India since it is such a diverse culture, this country has adapted the western version of honoring mother. The same focus as the rest of the world is given to the importance of mothers and how they have sacrificed for their children and family.

The goddess Durga is pictured above.

The Hindus, on the other hand, celebrate the goddess Durga, who is also known as the Divine Mother during a festival that lasts for 10 days. The festival, Durga Puja, celebrates how good overcomes evil. This festival is earmarked with feasts, celebrations and gifts given to family and friends.

No matter how mothers are celebrated, they remain the focus of family and given honor.

In honor of the women in your life, we suggest any one of these handmade items that are sure to please.

Cedar Waxwings and Spring Promotions

Volume 16 Issue 3, March 2019

What's New in March?
As is our tradition here at Blue Morning Expressions, we are once again hosting our annual Mother’s Day Countdown featuring our friends who create some fantastic handmade gifts. From jewelry to stained glass to handknits to gifts for mom’s dogs, we have it all. Bookmark our blog and come back and see each week’s gift ideas. We run this for 9 weeks with a midweek post. This year, we are featuring the Mother’s Day traditions around the world. March 9, 2019 is Week 1.

In addition to the upcoming handmade extravaganza, we will be finishing up our posters and other print items. As the weather starts to warm up and stay sunny, it makes for a great incentive to start making more beads and other colorful goodies.

Harry has completed his kindergarten classes (as many as I am going to take anyway), and we will be starting the beginner agility course on the 1st of March. It should run us both ragged and tired, but hopefully, successful.
Until then, here are some robins and cedar waxwings enjoying berries in our backyard.

What’s New

Key rings: I am taking the key rings one step further and creating purse charms and rings. With lots of beads and things. Have them started, but nothing to show yet. Soon ...

Earrings: I have been busy creating a lot of simple earrings that have some sparkle and make statements. Primarily, I have been focused on charms and crystals for the moment.
Thimbles: 2019 Mother’s Day and a number of puppy and cat thimbles are now up for sale.

You will find all of my beads, canes and finished jewelry on my website.

Until next month,
Julie

Things to Look Forward To:

New Products:

Leggings: My supplier has added a great legging line, so I have been experimenting with design and element placement. I have several in my store now and am working on peacock leggings designs.
Posters: Many of my bible verse posters are now available online, but I am still writing up the descriptions, so they may be hard to find. I also had time to add a dozen or so hot rod posters.
Bookmarks: I decided that some of my beads and images would translate nicely to bookmarks. Those are on the bench.
