Mother's Day Countdown 2022 Midweek 4 Famous Mothers

Mother Teresa

While never a mother in the traditional sense, Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa of Calcutta) was the founder and leader of the Missionaries of Charity, where over 4500 nuns in 133 countries tended to the sick. These women cared for those who were dying of AIDS, tuberculosis and leprosy. In addition to their ministry, they also have soup kitchens, mobile clinics, orphanages and schools.

Sister Teresa was born in 1910 in North Macedonia’s capital Skopje, which was in the Ottoman Empire at the time of her birth. She committed herself to a life as a missionary as young as 12-years-old when she heard the stories of the nuns in Bengal. She made her vows in 1937 in Calcutta where she stayed for 20 years. Sister Teresa became Mother Teresa when she packed up and went to live amongst the poor in order to better serve their needs.

She began a hospice from a converted Hindu temple in 1952. She opened the doors to other faiths by allowing those to die with dignity according to their faiths. She wanted them ‘to die like angels – loved and wanted’.

She was born Albanian, Catholic in faith, and she belonged to the world. Her travels took her to the worse places on earth, and she rescued 37 children caught in the crossfire of the Palestinians and the Israelis in Beirut. She tended to those exposed to radiation during Chernobyl, and she traveled meeting one tragedy after another, she opened missions and taught successors how to care for those in need.

Never a mother, but always a Mother, Teresa touched everyone as a human being that was deserving of dignity. She died on September 5th in 1997. As she lived, she was overlooked by the world in death. That was the same day that Princess Diana died.

Mother's Day Countdown 2022 Week 3 Midweek Famous Mothers

Marie Curie might be best known as the Mother of Modern Physics, but she has many firsts under her belt. She was the only woman to win the Nobel Prize more than once, as well as the person who coined the phrase ‘radioactivity’. Her work in isolating radioactive isotopes revealed the elements radium and polonium.  These discoveries allowed her to create an x-ray service that could be used in the field during WWI.

Her daughter, Irene, went on to follow her mother into science and was a Nobel Laureate in Physics and Chemistry by her own right.

Marie’s other daughter, Eva, was a journalist, pianist and American author.

In 1934, Marie died from leukemia brought on by her work with radioactive materials. Today, her notebooks are still radioactive, so they are held in lead boxes in storage.

Mother's Day Countdown 2022 Week 2 Midweek Post Famous Mothers

Irena Sendler is the Mother of the Children of the Holocaust, as well as the biological mother of three of her own. Over 2,500 children were smuggled to freedom by Irena and her friends when the Nazis began their march into Poland. The women forged documents and papers for at-risk children in the Warsaw Ghetto. They then hustled them out of the ghetto and into safe spaces like orphanages and convents where they were cared for by the nuns.

Even though she was very careful, Irena was arrested by the Germans and sentenced to death. As she was being taken away, she handed off the list of children to one of the other women for safekeeping.

Her detention was cut short once a benefactor bribed a prison guard who secured her release. However, she had been beaten severely as she was being interrogated.

In order for the children to be returned to their rightful families once the danger passed, she had hidden their real names in jars that she kept safe. After the war, the names were handed over to the Polish officials, so they could reunite children with families. Although, many of those families no longer existed.

Jack Mayer tells the story of the names in jars in his 2011 book, Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project.

Irena spent her entire life advocating for children up until her death in 2008 at the age of 98.

Mother's Day Countdown 2022 Week 1 Midweek Post Famous Mothers

Julia Ward Howe can be given credit for Mother’s Day even though Anne Jarvis was responsible for the organization of the holiday. It was Julia’s writing that began the tradition. In 1872, she was the editor at Woman’s Journal where she penned the Mother’s Day Proclamation that laid the groundwork for the holiday that Anne Jarvis was inspired to launch.

Julia also was the author behind the pen on The Battle Hymn of the Republic after an inspirational meeting with Abraham Lincoln. She went on to be a co-founder in the New England Woman Suffrage Association and was a vehement advocator of the education of women.

In 1908, she died at the age of 88. She was the mother of six children.
