The Christmas Carol too Scandalous for the Choir to Sing
Cover your mouth with your hand and clutch your pearls because this Christmas carol was deemed too dirty for the choir to sing in church. Suggestive, racy and just too scandalous for the kids to sing, the song, One Horse Open Sleigh was banished to the heathens in the street.
Of course, the heathens picked it right up and sang it with gusto!
Truthfully, this song had absolutely nothing to do with Christmas to start with as it was penned in 1957 as a Thanksgiving Day song. Along the way, it got lumped into the songs that were sung during the Christmas season in the 1860s and 1870s.
This dashing and daring song was a fun parlor song that first sung in public in Washington Street in Boston in 1857. It was first recorded in 1889 on an Edison cylinder.
This poor song is rife with controversy and rumors. There are no less than TWO places who declare themselves to be the place with James Lord Pierpont penned it. Medford, Massachusetts claims the song as theirs saying that Pierpont wrote the song at the Simpson Tavern and was inspired by the town’s sleigh races.
“Au contraire”, says Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Pierpont was in Savannah at the time of the copyright of that song, so it was NOT penned in the Simpson Tavern, but in the Unitarian Church. So they say in Savannah.
The tussle over this song comes from conflicting copyright dates. One is for One Horse Open Sleigh and one is for Jingle Bells, but it is the same song with two titles at filed at two different times. Both towns have rather bold historic markers that declare their ownership to the song.
None the less, the real story is what made this song a blush on the good girl’s cheeks. Rosy cheeks and all.
Jingle Bells became a tavern song that was great for drinking and carousing. After all, the extended lyrics have people rolling around in the back of that sleigh playing patty-cake and slap and tickle. A Victorian Tunnel of Love, if you will.

This can be best described as – someone is laughing at me.

And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away.
Since everyone learns from other’s mistakes, his advice to other guys is to get a faster horse and ride like the ghost of Christmas past is chasing you.

Take the girls tonight
and sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bobtailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead.
Since I am having so much fun with this song, I have to share this wonderful recording. It came in 1965 from far, far away.

Jingle Bells has been parodied and goofed on for years. The worse is the barking dogs! The Three Stooges even got in on the act at one point, but I tried to find a suitable and fun version to share.

Tinkle Bells
Yep, that is exactly how this song was titled when it was penned UNTIL one of the song’s authors’ wife – said “are you out of your mind?” That means urinate!
Oops.
Good thing they changed it, and it is one of those songs that we all know and love. It has been covered by everyone, but it was originally written for and performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in the movie, Lemon Drop Kid.
Bing Crosby hit the charts with its first recording released in 1950. Once it became popular, Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell were called back into the studio to do a more polished version of the song.
The authors, Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, have given conflicting stories about the origin of the song, but it was either the bells from the Santas and the Salvation Army or the bell that sat on an office desk top that brought us Silver Bells.

As much as I love this song, I thought it would be fun to hear it in its original state by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell rather than a more polished and familiar Bing version.

What's New in October?
We look forward past the hurricanes of September towards a brighter and safer October. While we were spared much of the damage that the rest of Florida, the Keys, Texas and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico sustained, this season took a toll on our area. Living in tropical areas is relaxing and nerve wracking, depending upon the time of year. Be glad when the cooler winds blow and not at 100 MPH.
I started working on designing and creating new bracelets and keychains. Sometimes, I just have so many supplies that I have been saving for the right moment, that I just have to do something with them. This month you will see a lot of new bracelets hit the shelves at Blue Morning Expressions.
For the moment, look at a dragonfly that was on my porch and did not escape the lens of my camera. :)
Bracelets: I have gone charm bracelet crazy and have introduced bangle bracelets to the mix because they are fun.
Keyrings: Since I started, I have had keyrings on my To Do list. Well, I got one done! There are many more that will go in my Amazon store.
Thimbles: Starting Christmas 2017 thimbles now.

New Products:
Hotrod magnets: I am finishing up the hotrod magnets, and I have a couple dozen done, but not featured in the shop.
Tote Bags: These are all around prints, so that means that my patterns can completely cover the bag. My supplier is also doing t-shirts, but I have not designed for them yet.
Print Pieces: I am working on canvases and posters. I have been working on putting together the Scenes from a Car Show series into print.
