Orange You Glad It’s Getting Warmer?

Orange

Bright, cheerful and powerful. That’s what you see when you look at something orange. It is a brilliant hot color that makes everything around it glow with warmth. It moves and flows like hot lava. It is spontaneous and playful. When you want something that stands out, then select something orange.

This stone is a cousin to the peridot and can only be found in the countries of Serbia and Tajikistan. It is either transparent or translucent and yellow orange in color.

The garnet is more than a red stone; it can be found in some lovely oranges. It’s proper name is the Malaya garnet. The more traditional red garnet is the birthstone of January and the sign of Aquarius.

This gemstone is commonly known as the fire opal or jelly opal if the coloring is not so bright. October babies and Libra babies consider the opal their birthstone. The orange opal is not a common gemstone, so it is rather pricey.

The pretty citrine is extremely rare. It is a variety of quartz and is really a yellow or brown color. There are a lot of so called citrine stones on the marketplace that are really heat treated quartz rather than true citrine. November’s child adores citrine.

Think Pink this Spring

Pink is so sweet and so girly girl. It adds a lot of femininity to a piece of jewelry or an article of clothing. Pink is less passionate than red, but offers an innocence instead.

This mineral can be cut into cabs, and when the light hits it just right, you can see a star within the stone. It can fade over time. It is the Taurus birthstone.

This mineral is from the calcite series and raspberry pink is the most common color. Although, it can be found in faded pink or even orange at times. This stone is found in copper veins. This is the state gem of Colorado.

This mineral is a lot like sodalite, and it can be translucent to completely transparent. The stones have the ability to turn deeper red as they warm up, so when worn, they can become a warmer color if they are in contact with the skin. A mood mineral, if you will.

When these stones are green, they are called emeralds, but when they are pink, well, they are pink. They vary from light pink to dark pink.

Oakworms and Zoom Calls

What's New in April?

Feels like we went from winter to summer in a blink of an eye. One day it was a nice and comfortable 70 degrees and then it went to 90 and humid almost overnight. Or maybe not really overnight …

In the meantime, I took a bit of a trip to Tennessee only to turn around and drive as quickly as possible to stay in front of the line of storms that hit Alabama hard. Our prayers go out to the folks who lost everything in these storms. Looks like it might be a very stormy spring season for the whole country. Montana is seeing double-digit inches of snow.

While all of this is going on, I have been making new beads with bright, colorful flowers. Trying out some bold new designs and working with artwork to create one of a kind pieces. At some point, these will also end up in my loose beads for sale.

Flowers are starting to bloom, and our bird feeder is very busy with cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers and doves. Even the painted bunting is still hanging around enjoying some of the seeds. We had an unidentified caterpillar that I have spent months trying to figure him out. It’s now been identified as an oakworm that ends up looking like this:

Green with Envy

Who wouldn’t be just green with envy when they take a look at these magnificent gemstones all sporting the green of money. The word green means “grow” as in grass and is filled with the promise of youth and energy. When applied to envy and jealousy, we can thank Shakespeare for the green-eyed monster as described in The Merchant of Venice. Now, it is aligned with money and prosperity.

Just like the red diamonds we talked about last week, these are also very rare. However, you have a better chance of finding a green diamond than a red one. The diamond is a gemstone associated with the April baby.

Green Garnet

Another more traditionally red gemstone, the green garnet is one of those unusual finds. They are part of the andradite species and can be narrowed down even further to the demantoid, which happens to be one of the most expensive garnet. The garnet is a birthstone for January and associated with Aquarius.

The most common tourmaline that we see is the watermelon stone, but a truly green stone like the chrome tourmaline is a deep rich green that is almost reminiscent of the
Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz.

Peridot

The gemstone peridot is derived from the olivine mineral. It only comes in green, but it can have a variety of shades of green. It has a luster and is the August birthstone.
